Opening hours tell you when a shop is busy. This map shows the opposite: storefronts in the Inner and Outer Sunset that are closed at the hour you pick, and how much floor space each one has. A bakery or a yoga studio with its doors shut can still host a meetup, a class or a supper club.
- Pick a time your group wants to meet.
- Browse the closed spaces, largest first, or tap a dot on the map.
- Ask the owner. Each space says when to drop by, with a note you can send.

Where the data comes from
Sources
- Storefronts and hours: OpenStreetMap (Oct 3, 2026). Where it has no hours, they were read from the business's own website when it posts them clearly.
- Registrations: DataSF Registered Business Locations (Oct 9, 2026) confirm a place is active. Places that appear only in the city registry are left off, since a registration can name a person at a home address.
- Building size, stories, use: SF Assessor property roll, 2025. Lots and zoning: DataSF parcels. Footprints and streets: OpenStreetMap.
How floor space is estimated
Each business is matched to its lot. The Assessor's building area is divided by the number of stories to get the ground floor, checked against the mapped footprint, cut 15% for walls and stairs, then split among the businesses on that lot. Good means the two sources agree and at most two businesses share the floor. Rough means something didn't line up. Treat every number as a starting point for a conversation with the owner.
Limits
- National and large regional chains, banks and gas stations are left out on purpose.
- Most storefronts don't have posted hours in open data yet. They show under "No hours" and aren't counted in the totals.
- Hours describe a typical week. Holidays, seasonal hours and recent changes aren't reflected.
- "Closed" means closed to customers. Staff may still be inside.
- The drawings show the lot (dashed) and building footprint from city and map data. Street View photos come from Google.
